The Yellowknife F.U. Open 2024, hosted by the Mediocre Golf Association (MGA), was anything but mediocre last Sunday, as 36 golfers vied for the top prize of $1.35.
Not your average tournament, these golfers had more fun than stress from trying to be under par.
But then, that is the entire premise of the Yellowknife Mediocre Golf Association: fun, camaraderie and good times.
Shaun 鈥淢oose鈥 Morris, leader of the Yellowknife chapter, said the local group is in its ninth "mediocre" season.
鈥淚t鈥檚 regular tournament rules but for the bogey golfer, if you are better than bogey, you get penalty strokes. It makes it fair for everybody.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all about having fun but also learning the proper rules of golf for tournaments. It鈥檚 a 鈥榥o pressure鈥 type thing,鈥 Morris said.
The F.U. Open stands for freedom and unity, he said.
鈥淭here are chapters all over the world 鈥 most of them are in the States,鈥 Morris said of the popularity of the MGA, which was started in San Francisco.
While golfers there wear their festive USA stars and stripes attire, during the Yellowknife tournament, Morris said players are instead encouraged to wear red and white.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a really fun, fun way to golf,鈥 he said.
Ryan Sheppard collected the $1.35 top prize on Sunday while 16th place finisher Mike Enns received a mere two cents.
