A Fort Smith man is facing potential charges after RCMP found a semi-automatic handgun in his home.

NT RCMP say they were at a home following up a 鈥渘on-criminal鈥� matter when they determined a male who was at the residence was making a case to be placed under arrest. They arrested the male and searched the home and say they discovered a SIG Sauer P250 semi-automatic handgun.

鈥淭he presence of illegally possessed handguns in our communities presents a risk to everyone,鈥� said NT RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Matt Halstead. 鈥淲e have seen a number of recent incidents involving the seizure of firearms or gun violence that have impacted our communities in tragic ways. The RCMP remains committed to getting these weapons off the street and destroying them so they cannot cause further harm.

鈥淚nvestigators are consulting with RCMP firearms experts to determine the appropriate charges.鈥�
